The Newcastle Local Municipality has issued a statement on the power disruptions that has caused concern in the community, read the following statement to get clarity about the above mentioned issue.
The Newcastle Local Municipality was made aware of electricity disruptions in eMadadeni, Osizweni and Blaauwbosch. Last week the municipality held talks with Eskom in a bid to try and solve the issue as speedily as possible.
Even though the municipality does not supply electricity to these areas due to licensing rights, municipal authorities have vowed not to sit back until a solution has been found.
Deputy Mayor Cllr. Reuben Molelekoa and the municipal technical team have been spearheading these talks with Eskom. The municipality was informed that most of the disruptions were caused by illegal connections in these areas.
“We understand how illegal connections affect electricity supply in some areas around Newcastle. Even though we don’t directly provide electricity to these areas, mostly due to licensing rights, we’ve been engaging Eskom on behalf of our residents in bid to try and find long lasting solutions. We greatly sympathize with residents who are not guilty of illegal connections and those who have to bare the brunt due to the actions of those who connect electricity illegally. We understand their frustrations. Last week electricity supply also affected me as well due to illegal connections,” said Deputy Mayor Cllr. Molelekoa”.
